What is Las Monarcas de Pomona?
Las Monarcas de Pomona is a short docu-film that centers the lives of immigrant and first-generation Latina activists in Pomona, California. In partnership with Gente Organizada, a social action non-profit organization in Pomona, the film follows Graciela Conchas, a long-time Pomona resident and activist, who has dedicated much of her life to fighting for social justice with and for women. The film also highlights other women in Pomona who share their wisdom, in particular, how they have challenged patriarchy, racism, and have fought to better their community.
What are we raising money for?
We aim to raise funds for the screening of Las Monarcas at Cal Poly Pomona in March 2025, during Women’s History Month. The event will include a Q&A session with student filmmakers from CPP and Pomona, providing them with hands-on experience in research and film production while celebrating the resilience of Pomona's Latina activists.
Who are our partners?
This short film is part of an ongoing collaboration between Dr. Bianca N, Haro, Assistant Professor of Sociology, and Gente Organizada, a social action nonprofit organization in Pomona. Dr. Haro has worked with them for over four years, and their most recent project, a short documentary film titled The Unheard Voices of Pomona-Toibinga, will be screened on campus this October.
More about our partners Gente Organizada
Since 2014, Gente Organizada (Gente) has been dedicated to bringing together generations to access, build, and wield their collective power to achieve justice and equity for Pomona's most vulnerable families. We envision a community where all families — especially working-class and low-income families, people of color, LGBTQIA+ youth and adults, and immigrant families — are free from oppression. Our organization has and always will be led by youth and parents of Pomona.
