ChemE Car Competition

A ChemE car is a small, self-propelled vehicle created by interdisciplinary teams of engineering students. The competition challenges teams to integrate principles from chemistry, physics, and engineering design in order to build a chemically powered vehicle that can travel a specified distance. Students apply concepts like reaction kinetics and circuit design to optimize performance and efficiency, fostering collaboration, creativity, and practical problem-solving in real-world engineering.

Our mission is to spark interest in chemical engineering through hands-on projects that mirror real-world experiences. We aim to equip students with transferable skills while cultivating a supportive community. Emphasizing teamwork, inclusivity, commitment, and interdisciplinary collaboration, we offer opportunities for lab work, data analysis, coding, 3D modeling, and physical assembly to build a fully functional car. Our goal is to prepare students to compete successfully in American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) competitions, providing a positive and enjoyable experience for all, regardless of prior knowledge.

Our vision is to excel in regional competitions and advance to nationals, demonstrating that success is achievable through perseverance and teamwork. We aspire to create an inclusive community at Cal Poly Pomona where students collaborate, innovate, and grow together. By supporting our initiatives, we enhance our members' success and foster meaningful connections within our community.

Our ChemE Car team consists of three specialized groups: the Stopping Team designs the reaction to safely halt the vehicle, the Power Team focuses on the reaction to initiate movement, and the Chassis Team assembles the car, integrating components from both teams. Each group meets weekly to collaborate, while the entire team convenes monthly to provide updates and plan future activities.

Our timeline includes four key phases:

  1. Research, where members review competition rules and select reactions and materials.
  2. Experimentation and Design, during which initial tests and foundational designs are developed.
  3. Prototype, where components are assembled and troubleshooting occurs.
  4. Compete and Present at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) conference.

By supporting us, you will allow every student to access valuable hands-on engineering experience. Furthermore, your backing will ensure that essential resources are covered, empowering our team to focus on innovation and success.

$5

Catalyst Sponsor

Just as catalysts speed up reactions, this level helps kickstart our efforts. With a donation of $5, you will assist in purchasing single-use lab items such as gloves, pipettes, and face masks. As a thank you, we will post your support on our social media channels.

$25

Reaction Sponsor

Powering the core of our project, the Reaction Sponsor level ensures the safety of our members. With a contribution of $25, your support will help us purchase personalized lab coats and goggles for one member. Your logo will be featured on our social media posts and on general body meeting slides.

$300

Propulsion Sponsor

Driving our car forward, the Propulsion Sponsor level provides a significant boost to our success. By donating $300, you will help fund necessary materials for the car, including chemicals and electrical components. Your support will be recognized on our social media, in general body meeting slides, and on competition posters.

$500

Innovation Sponsor

Pioneering new possibilities, the Innovation Sponsor level supports groundbreaking achievements. A donation of $500 will fully fund one member's attendance at the regional competition. In recognition of your generosity, your logo will be displayed on our social media, general body meeting slides, competition posters, and team shirts.

$1,000

Momentum Sponsor

As the ultimate force behind our progress, the Momentum Sponsor level ensures our continued excellence and growth. By donating $1,000, you will fully fund one member's participation in the national competition. Your support will be celebrated on social media, general body meeting slides, competition posters, team shirts, and even on the car itself. Additionally, we will feature a team picture with the car and your logo posted in the CPP Engineering building.
