What is UMBRA?

We are Cal Poly Pomona's Undergraduate Missiles Ballistics and Rocketry Association (UMBRA), a student-led rocketry organization focused on giving Cal Poly students the best "Learn By Doing" experience possible. We are comprised of three main rocket projects, 2 subdivision teams, and large workshop team set to give students hands on experience building and understanding rockets. Our three main projects include:

  • Speed Racer: A senior project team trying to be the first collegiate team in the country to make a hypersonic rocket. Having just finished our preliminary design through complex thermal, aerodynamic, and structural calculations and simulations, we are looking to construct a similar sub-scale rocket to further understand the behavior of our full-scale.
  • ExoBronco: A two-stage solid rocket attempting to launch to the Karman line. This is our most active and mature project, currently reaching the integration and testing phase soon.
  • Inferno: A liquid bi-propellant rocket utilizing complex thermal and fluid analysis to design our own optimized engine. We have recently finishing our piping and instrumentation diagrams and have moved in manufacturing key parts for the engine.

On top of these fantastic projects, we have our UMBRA Propulsion and UMBRA Electronics subdivision teams. These teams handle more intricate techniques and technologies such as composite materials research and propellant characterization from UMBRA Propulsion and custom electronics and softwares from UMBRA Electronics. The last project we have to offer is our Small Rocket Competition, a program where members new to rocketry are able to learn the basics and put them to the test at an end-of-semester competition on who can build the best amateur rocket.

Being the largest Aerospace club on campus, our impact on students is not a small one. While we primarily serve the Aerospace students attending Cal Poly, we reach a wide range of engineering and STEM majors. We believe that we have a duty to the students to take any student interested in being apart of the Aerospace Industry to give them the best college experience possible and set them up for success in the future. In UMBRA, professionalism is valued just as much as technical skills. We are regularly communicating with industry professionals on what they want to see from incoming industry workers, giving UMBRA students an accurate representation on what it takes and what it means to be apart of a functioning company.

Any donations that we recieve go right back to our projects to pay for parts, materials, transportation costs, and manufacturing costs. We hope that you consider donating to us as we strive to build the best rockets around.

$20

Up and Away

A donation of this size would help one of our teams afford some necessary parts that it takes to send our rockets into success.

$50

Out of this World

This donation would help one of our teams buy some of our more expensive parts or more quality parts to ensure a clean flight.

$100

To the Moon

This donation would help multiple teams get custom parts manufactured, repair some of our current machinery we have on hand, or conduct off-site test that help us better understand the nature of what we are building and how to improve it.

$500

To the Stars

A donation of this level would greatly help all of our teams conduct tests, design our own custom parts and softwares, manufacture those custom parts, or obtain a great number of parts for us. Ad Astra!
