The Black Achievement Success & Engagement (BASES) Scholars Program at Cal Poly Pomona is a transformative initiative designed to foster community, academic excellence, and personal growth among Black/African American students. The program supports first-year Scholars as they navigate the university experience, empowering them with tailored resources to thrive both academically and socially.
Since its inception, BASES has grown to serve a larger portion of incoming Black/African American students each year. In its third year, the program provided essential support to 31 Scholars, representing 31% of the Black/African American first-year cohort. Through specialized courses, academic guidance, peer mentorship, and co-curricular programming, the program creates a nurturing environment where Scholars develop a strong sense of belonging, build critical thinking skills, and deepen their appreciation for Black excellence.
One of the most unique aspects of the BASES Program is its commitment to centering the Black experience. Scholars describe the program as a "home" where they see themselves reflected and supported by a community of peers and mentors who share their experiences and aspirations. The results speak for themselves: BASES Scholars have higher GPAs and retention rates than their Black/African American peers who do not participate, and they outperform the general student body.
Donations to the BASES Scholars Program will ensure that this life-changing initiative continues to expand and flourish. Your contributions will help provide vital resources such as additional tutoring, expanded peer mentorship, and increased programming that directly addresses the needs of Black students at Cal Poly Pomona. With your support, the program can continue to strengthen its foundation and empower the next generation of Black leaders, scholars, and changemakers.
Join us in supporting the BASES Scholars Program and investing in the future of Black excellence at Cal Poly Pomona!
With a $50 donation, you’ll help provide BASES Scholars with program-branded apparel and co-curricular materials. Wearing BASES apparel, such as t-shirts or hoodies, not only builds a sense of pride and community but also strengthens the Scholars’ connection to the program.
A $100 donation will help fund refreshments and transportation for BASES Scholars during their educational excursions and community-building events. These outings—whether to cultural landmarks, academic conferences, or leadership retreats—offer Scholars the chance to broaden their horizons and build lasting relationships.
A $1,000 donation will be directed toward student scholarships, providing crucial financial support to deserving BASES Scholars. These scholarships help relieve the financial burden of tuition and other expenses, allowing students to focus on their academic and personal growth. Your generous contribution will empower Black/African American students to excel at Cal Poly Pomona, stay on track toward graduation, and realize their full potential
