The Greatest Show on Dirt: W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center Sunday Show

As a child, W.K. Kellogg had a strong love of animals. There was an Arabian horse  named “Spot” with which the Kellogg children became fast friends and playmates. He was ridden bareback, singly, and twos and threes; astride, standing up, or sidesaddle.

When Spot was eventually sold, a young W.K. Kellogg was heartbroken and vowed someday he would own a whole stable of Arabian steeds. This childhood dream of W.K. Kellogg eventually came true with the establishment of the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch in Pomona.

The ranch became a popular destination for 1920’s Hollywood starts to visit rare Arabian horses, and Kellogg’s horses appeared in several films. The ranch became so popular that a show was established in order to better showcase the Arabian horses.

W.K. Kellogg presented the ranch to the state of California in 1932 with the stipulation that the Arabian breeding program and the Sunday Shows be maintained. True to his wishes, horses are still presented in the Sunday Shows at 2 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month, October–May.

Cal Poly Pomona is grateful to continue this tradition of the Sunday Show, which features Cal Poly Pomona students riding Arabians in different disciplines from Native Costume to Ladies Side Saddle. Additionally, the trick horse act is always a crowd favorite! Training and handling are accomplished entirely by the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center’s students and staff, and the show program is designed to demonstrate the versatility and fine qualities of the Arabian breed.

While the Sunday Shows had to pause due to the unprecedented pandemic, we are happy to launch once again this beloved tradition for the 2023–24 academic year. Each year, we welcome approximately 1,600 fans to campus to celebrate the Arabian horse.

However, we need your help! The cost of running a show is approximately $1,000 per show or $8,000 per academic year which covers horse show supplies, saddles, bridles, tack, and show clothes for students. A gift of any size to the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center Excellence Fund will assist us in celebrating the past while we simultaneously look to the future.
