What is UMBRA?

The Undergraduate Missiles, Ballistics, and Rocketry Association (UMBRA) is a student-led organization at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and a proud chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, USA (SEDS-USA). For over 15 years, our club has been an integral part of our members academic, social, and professional lives, hosting year long projects competing in nation-wide competitions, semesterly workshops, and bi-monthly general meetings to include even more members. UMBRA aims to provide an experience unique to others, embracing Cal Poly Pomona’s “Learn by Doing” philosophy. We help our nearly 200 members utilize the ideas and skills they learn in the classroom to real life engineering applications and projects.

With our growing numbers of members, our projects have followed suit. This year, our projects include our Singularity Rocket Project for the FAR 51025 competition, NASA Student Launch (NSL), Exo-Bronco Rocket Project (Multi-Year), Project Inferno Liquid Rocket Engine, and UMBRA Propulsion which develops the motors for all of our rockets. Singularity Rocket Project aims to reclaim the 1st place position in the FAR 51025 competition, set to launch in June of 2023. NSL takes part in the NASA Student Launch Initiative competition at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama with launch set for April of 2023. Exo-Bronco is aiming to be the first student led, multistage rocket to the karman line. With development set to take place over three years, with our altitude goal being 100,000ft this year.  Project Inferno is our entry into the liquid rocket engine world, developing a system for a bipropellant liquid engine to give our members greater experience in propulsion devices. Lastly, UMBRA Propulsion develops, manufactures, and tests all of our experimental motors, currently designing engines for Singularity and Exo Bronco.

In addition, we host workshops such as our Level 1 workshop, introducing our less experienced members to the nuances of building a high powered rocket from scratch. Additionally, we hold resume reviews and interview prep, skill clinics for professional softwares, tours of industry factories and offices, and events for our members to make connections with UMBRA Alums and industry recruiters.

UMBRA’s mission is to inspire and enrich the pursuit of study, discussion, and innovation in aerospace engineering and beyond.
