“Doing what’s right today means no regrets tomorrow.” -W.K. Kellogg
W.K. Kellogg believed in the power of communities to forge solutions for the health, happiness, and well-being for young people. His goal was to prepare individuals with the knowledge and resources to pursue those answers by fostering educational opportunities.
Mr. Kellogg also believed in the magic of the Arabian horse. In 1932, he donated his expanded property and horses to the state of California which in turn eventually became Cal Poly Pomona. The University continues to embrace this legacy by caring and breeding over 80 horses and educating the campus and local communities on these majestic animals.
Today’s programs provide students with hands-on learning and research opportunities as well as special community programs. Examples of engagement activities include:
Horses for Heroes: In partnership with the University’s Veterans Resource Center (VRC), horses are matched with current students that have served our country. The program is designed to integrate student veterans to the university and improve their overall physical and mental health, well-being, leadership skills, and academic progress.
Horsepower/Women Power: Students from the Womxn’s Resource Center “adopt” a horse for a semester. Like the veterans, participants learn valued horse handling skills as well as the history of the Arabian, women and horses in history, horse behavior, and horse psychology.
Sunday Shows: Dating back to 1926, the Sunday Show tradition started by Mr. Kellogg is a tradition to promote the Arabian horse to the public.
Horsemanship Club: Provides all current students—from beginners to advanced riders—the opportunity to pursue their equine interests. Participants actively engage in the various programs already mentioned, as well as the Student Lesson Program which provides a forum to learn and refine horsemanship skills.
Student Assistants: Several students receive stipends to provide daily care and well-being of the horses which prepares them for future career-related jobs in the equine industry.
To maintain these important programs, it is important to invest in the care of our horse community!
In the spirit of W.K. Kellogg, we hope you will consider "doing what is right" and helping horses like CP Rhapsody, a 21-year-old mare, born and raised at Cal Poly Pomona. The proud mother of four foals, she also is a crucial member in our educational programs.
You can help today by sponsoring a horse like CP Rhapsody for a day, a week, a month, or a year with a donation to the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center Excellence Fund!
