The Issue
Issues of justice are embedded in every aspect of climate change, and as emissions increase so do inequities worldwide. Low income, economically marginalized communities, individuals suffering from chronic diseases, older people, and vulnerable populations, in general, will be disproportionately affected by climate change. Furthermore, due to uneven social and economic development, many of those with the least resources will face the most intense climate impacts. Globalization has made the world smaller, but temporal and spatial distance separates the causes and effects of climate change. Those who have most benefited from the sources of emissions are living in a different world from those who are most harmed, making accountability more difficult.
The Center
The Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies is committed to reducing our impact on climate change by advancing the principles of sustainable living and equity. Our vision is to become a contemporary center for education, demonstration, outreach, and research on one of the most important environmental issues of our time: climate change.
The Scholarship
To address those that are most vulnerable to climate change, who are also those that have contributed less we must support initiatives for climate justice. In recognition of this need, the John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies is proposing a new student scholarship dedicated to work that contributes to reducing our effects on anthropogenic climate change with special emphasis on those that are most vulnerable and have the least resources.
The proposed scholarship will also support the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to make higher education more accessible. The scholarship will be awarded annually to graduate students in the Master of Science in Regenerative Studies and undergraduate students that have declared a Minor in Regenerative Studies. The award will be for course work, research or involvement in activities that benefit the planet and communities disproportionately affected by climate change. Inaugural award will be in spring 2021.
All donations to this scholarship are tax-deductible. The scholarship account is held in the Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit organization (Federal ID 83-2300241).

The Basic Needs Initiative at Cal Poly Pomona estimates that students spend about $9 per day on groceries. A gift of $65 would help one Climate Center Scholar pay for about one week of meals and other necessities.
A gift of $130 would help one Climate Center Scholar pay for about two weeks of meals and other necessities.
Help us start the first year of the Lyle Center Climate Justice Scholarship strong with a gift of $250. More gifts will allow us to support more students.
This scholarship will help Lyle Center Climate Justice Scholars minimize the time they spend at part time jobs so they can maximize the time they spend focusing on their studies to support a more climate friendly planet for all. $750 is the equivalent of nearly 70 hours of minimum wage work.
The estimated annual room and board cost for an undergraduate at Cal Poly Pomona is $16,742. A gift at this level would provide a little over a full month of room and board for a Lyle Center Climate Justice Scholar.
