The Art Department seeks to address the history of colonialism, racism, and discrimination in all forms that have historically steered the pedagogy of design, studio arts, and art history education, as well as the industries that accept our graduates. As a department we are committed to eradicating the injustices of the past by increasing the diversity of our student population which will in turn increase diversity in the field. In pursuit of this goal, we are establishing the Art Department Scholarship for Diverse Voices.
This proposed scholarship seeks to increase accessibility for students from diverse and/or socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue a career in Art, Art History, or Visual Communication Design. This scholarship is aligned with the University’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and making higher education more accessible.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a different student from the disciplines –Art, Art History, and Visual Communication Design. The scholarship recipient will be an exemplarily scholar, and/or visual communicator, with an interest in increasing diversity and social justice within our fields. The Department of Art Scholarship Committee will be responsible for administering and selecting the scholarship recipient. Its inaugural award will be in spring 2021.
