About Donald G. Wells
Civil engineering professor emeritus Donald G. Wells passed away on May 1 following an extended illness. Affectionately known as “Water Wells”, he was a leader in the environmental and water resources group within the Civil Engineering Department and was especially instrumental in enhancing the department’s laboratory facilities. A graduate of Stanford University, he joined the faculty in 1970 and retired in 2003.
Wells was actively engaged in student extracurricular activities, both formal and informal. He served for many years as the faculty advisor for the Cal Poly Pomona chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and loved playing volleyball and other impromptu sports with his students. He set a very high standard for faculty-student rapport and mentorship, a legacy that continues to this day. His retirement party in 2003 will long be remembered for its outpouring of affection from his former students, many of whom have gone on to very prestigious positions in industry and government.
He was also very active in professional affairs, including service on the board of directors of the Los Angeles Section of ASCE, and was a recipient of the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award.
About the Donald G. Wells Memorial Endowed Scholarship
In memory of his legacy, the College of Engineering has created the Donald G. Wells Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Donald touched so many lives in a positive and supportive way. Contributing to this scholarship will help continue that tradition.
It's been a rough year, and we had to cancel our Annual Golf Tournament. But you can tell this year it cant get the best of us by giving $20.20 and making it represent the amazing impact we collectively make in the lives of Civil Engineering students.
The Basic Needs Initiative at Cal Poly Pomona estimates that students spend about $9 per day on groceries. A gift of $125 would help one Donald G. Wells Scolar pay for about two weeks of meals and other necessities.
Just a dollar a day adds up to a huge impact in the life of a student. For a student with a part time job, this could easily be a full month's pay!
It is our hope that scholarship recipients can minimize the time they spend at part time jobs so they can maximize the time they spend focusing on their studies or internships. $750 is the equivalent of nearly 70 hours of minimum wage work!
The estimated annual room and board cost for an undergraduate at Cal Poly Pomona is $16,742. A gift at this level would provide a little over a full month of room and board for a Donald G. Wells Scholar.
Undergraduate Tuition at Cal Poly Pomona is about $7,396 per year. So a gift at this level would almost completely fund a Donald G. Wells Scholar's tuition expenses for a full semester.
