Kevin Colaner, Associate Vice President and Chief of Operations passed away unexpectedly in early May. Kevin’s husband, Aren Feliciano-Damiani, shared "Kevin was my husband, partner in life, and best friend for 23 years. We were one of the first same-sex couples in California to become registered domestic partners in 2000. We also became one of the first same-sex couples in California to become legally married in 2008. Kevin and I actively supported equal rights for all. Kevin was also completely committed to the success of all students, student services professionals, school programs, and Cal Poly Pomona. We shared a very good life filled with wonderful friends and beloved pets. Kevin lives on in our hearts."

Since he joined Cal Poly Pomona in 2008, Kevin brought dynamic energy, creativity, leadership and a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion. His leadership guided us through countless challenges, transitions and complex situations. Knowing that we are stronger when we come together, he worked hard to build bridges with humor and authenticity. Kevin had the ability to bring out the best of us.

Kevin was an incredible advocate for students and exhibited that in his numerous roles across campus. Whether dressing up as the Children’s Center Santa Claus, attending the Renaissance Scholars Thanksgiving Dinner, or assisting with finals in the Disability Resource Center, championing student success came naturally to him.

Bringing his leadership to National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) at a national level, he served on the 2019 Annual Conference Leadership Committee and the Center for First Generation Student Success Advocacy Group. At Cal Poly Pomona he re-established the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program, mentoring underrepresented students with the first cohort of fellows completing the program in 2019. To honor his contributions to NASPA, Kevin was awarded the Region VI Fred Turner Award for Outstanding Service to NASPA, the equivalent to a lifetime achievement award, in October 2019.

Please join us in continuing Kevin’s legacy and commitment to student success. Donations given on this page will be directed to CPP’s General Scholarship Fund with the intent to establish the Kevin Colaner Memorial Scholarship. Your contributions will not only assist students but will keep Kevin’s memory alive in the countless students that will be aided in his honor.
