First proposed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk the Hyperloop is a revolutionary idea for public transportation across long distances. The Hyperloop is a network of air evacuated tunnels in which the public is transported in “pods” that travel at speeds of up to 700 mph. It is an answer to the issues of overcrowded city freeways and pollution from burning fossil fuels. Originally proposed to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles with only a 30-minute commute for the price of a bus ticket.
The SpaceX Hyperloop competition began in 2015 to quickly advance the development of Hyperloop technology. Student teams from all over the world compete to design a subscale prototype Hyperloop Pod with the goal of achieving the highest top speed over a 6-mile track in a vacuum tunnel. The CPP Hyperloop team will use these donations to fund the materials and manufacturing of the final prototype pod design and compete in July 2020.
